Some songs are just the greatest, you know?
Any song on this list has to have stood a small test of time. No new songs can be on this list until I feel I know them deeply enough to declare them The Greatest.
List permanently under construction.
- Britney Spears – “Toxic” (2003). What an incredible melody. Plus there’s that retrograde violin motive in the second verse. That’s right—retrograde.
- Janet Jackson – “Nasty Boys” (1986). Truthfully this song is only on here because of “My name ain’t Baby. It’s JANET. Ms. Jackson if you nasty.”
- MGMT – “Electric Feel” (2007). 6/4!
- Nate Dogg and Warren G – “Regulate” (1994). This is so smooth, so chill.
- Outkast – “Hey Ya” (2003). Messed up hypermeter, unusual chord loop, catchy chorus, A+.
- Phil Collins – “Sussudio” (1985). So dance-y!
- Stevie Wonder – “Superstition” (1972). Obviously.
- Soft Cell – “Tainted Love” (1981). I challenge you to name one thing that is not completely artfully done.
